To achieve what you see in the video I believe what you need is a tracking system and particle or other system that reacts to the inputs from the tracker.
Few years ago we did this performance Solver, which had this interactive floor tracking. The Kinect was mounted above the stage and it was able to capture area of about 7x5.5m. I basically did a threshold of a depth image coming from the sensor, it’s a simple solution, yet it is remarkably cheaper and easier to setup compared to IR camera based trackers.
