Create pad shortcut

There is of course already a lot of shortcuts, but I think I have one more around Pads.

There currently doesn’t seem to be a way to create a pad with a shortcut. You can of course Shift-double-click a link and it will create a pad, which is great, but you can’t create a pad on its own with a shortcut, for example when creating a record/class.

Creating an IOBox does have a nice shortcut of double-right-click and it lets you select the type while you are at it.

Can I propose that we do Shift-double-right-click to create a pad and it also pops up the datatype like for IOBoxes. That way creating standard pads for floats, integers, string, etc. would be way quicker than:

  1. double-click
  2. type pad
  3. Hit enter
  4. Type the name
  5. right-click
  6. Click configure
  7. double-click type
  8. type the datatype
  9. Hit enter
  10. Click away

Then it would be:

  1. Shift-double-right-click
  2. Select datatype (maybe pressing Enter at this stage will just create a generic pad with no datatype specified)
  3. Enter name
  4. Hit Enter

I think it would speed up creating lots of pads a lot.

Thanks for considering.

ps: @joreg I noticed in the Grey Book Shortcuts section, the Shift-double-clicking a link to create a pad in a link is not mentioned. Maybe you can add it! Thanks

First steps can be achieved a bit faster (without having to change back and forth between mouse and keyboard that often).

  1. double-click
  2. click New
  3. click Pad
  4. type name

Ah true, that is a gamma 6 thing then (still on 5.3)

What I would mostly love is a quick way to set a type for the pad like we can for IOBoxes. I would need that way more than creating an IOBox of a certain type, since I usually create IOBoxes from existing in/outputs.

Pads are always created on their own though (unless created in a link) and need to have a type set.

it’s actually there:

Ah yes, I didn’t think to look in the links section. I was thinking that it could also appear under the “Pads” section. Since it is about links and pads, I think it should be in both.

Either way I still believe it would be great to have a quick way to create pads on their own.
