3D Basics & Building Interaction

One Sentence: Whats happening in your workshop?
In the process of making an interactive prototype from scratch we will get used to working in 3D scenes with Kinect data and touch a lot of further leading concepts of vvvv like shaders, OSC communication, MIDI, using contributions and more.

What 3 tags describe your workshop?
beginner friendly, building interaction, 3d basics

In which of the three categories does your workshop fall: beginner, intermediate, advanced
Beginner/Intermediate

How long will your workshop be?
2x3h

Who is the target audience of your workshop?
People who took the beginners workshop and/or have basic knowledge of the interface and want to start building patches for interactive works.

What knowledge do you presume your participants have?
Familiarity with the interface, connecting nodes, simple data manipulation, using the inspektor, looking up help patches.

What will attendees of your workshop learn?
The workshop is supposed to be a bridge to the advanced workshops. We will see a lot of topics explained by them in detail. Starting off with describing the basics of 3D graphics in vvvv and using the most well known and common nodes and development patterns to get an overview, we explore the skeleton tracking capabilities of the Kinect and build a prototype to visualize the data. Also what the OSC protocol is and why it is a very useful tool when building interactive or generative remotely controlled projects.

At the end of this workshop you will leave with a general understanding of 3D basics: transformations, camera, shaders; sending and receiving data with the OSC protocol; and building a simple interactive prototype using the sensor data as example.

What technical requirements does your workshop have (apart from internet and a projector)?
No special requirements

Who would be the two hosts?
Jürgen Ropp (panta_rhei), Onur Olgaç (1010)

How would the hosts qualify for the topic? (Describe and add links to portfolio website, github, vimeo,… accounts)
We did a series of workshops (4 in total) for complete beginners in the winter semester 2016/2017 at Interface Culture department Kunstuniverstät Linz. The people who attended were able to connect the skeleton data to sample patches and create basic interaction at the end of the last workshop.
