i wonder if someone could tell me how to get rid of that value that sometimes shows up as an Ř, but sometimes it looks like that striked-through O.

this info seems to be hard to find, but i think it would fit in the Patching FAQ…

what you mean is the “nil” (Ø).
have a look at NIL and use AvoidNIL (Spreads) in your infected patches.
